SUMMARY:Leadership-CoP - Burnout - Sources\, Signs and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT
 Before the work of Dr Herbert Freudenberger\, burnou
 t was not something we discussed. A sense of exhaustion - physical &amp\;
 mental - disconnection\, and cynicism\, it is becoming more common place a
 t work.&nbsp\;
 Freudeberger's 12 step model of burnout helped us to unde
 rstand the process by which burnout happens. However\, it is not always th
 e case that burnout follows a predictable and methodical path. Indeed like
  grief\, it has a tendency to jump from one phase to another and even to s
 kip some phases altogether.
 “Burn-out is a syndrome conceptualized as
 resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully man
 aged. It is characterized by three dimensions:

 feelings of energy dep
 letion or exhaustion\;
 increased mental distance from one’s job\, or f
 eelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job\; and
 reduced pro
 fessional efficacy.

 Burn-out refers specifically to phenomena in the
 occupational context and should not be applied to describe experiences in
 other areas of life.” (WHO ICD-11 2019)
 Burnout leads to reduced perfo
 rmance\, mood changes\, distancing from work and people and more. It is al
 so a cause of poorer immune system function - not something that anyone wa
 nts to experience during Covid-19!
 &nbsp\;

 Researcher Christina
 Maslach and her colleagues have simplified the model to six factors in thr
 ee domains\, and more recent models based on work by&nbsp\;Veninga and Spr
 adley have reduced the phases to five starting with the honeymoon phase.&n
 bsp\;
 This is something speaker Ruth Pearce experienced - a role that st
 arted off as exciting and stimulating over time became draining and dishea
 rtening.&nbsp\;
 &nbsp\;

 In this session\, Ruth Pearce will explore
 the most common contributors to burnout\, signs that burnout is around the
  corner and steps we can take to prevent and reverse burnout.&nbsp\;

 The session will identify:

 6 leading sources of burnout
 T
