DESCRIPTION:Abstract
 The infectious disease COVID-19 is crippling most as
 pects of society. Ending this pandemic will require scientists to develop 
 ways of diagnosing\, treating and preventing the disease\, and the public 
 is understandably eager to know how close scientists are to these goals. H
 owever\, scientists often struggle to effectively communicate their resear
 ch to non-experts\, and both politicians and the media are imperfect inter
 mediaries. Using examples relevant to COVID-19\, this talk will help non-s
 cientists to evaluate what scientists say and understand what they really 
 mean. It will also provide advice for effectively discussing technical inf
 ormation with lay audiences.
 Objectives:
 - Understand the “business
 ” of science
 - Learn how to evaluate the who\, what\, and why of scien
 ce communication
 - Identify common unreported limitations of scientific 
 studies
 - Discuss ways scientists and non-scientists can communicate mor
 e effectively
 About the Speaker
 
 Andrew Macintyre\, PhD\, PMP is a m
 ember of the faculty at the Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI)\, where he
  leads a team developing treatments and vaccines for infectious diseases. 
 Prior to joining the DHVI\, he managed professional development and educat
 ion projects for the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biolo
 gy.
