En ding this pandemic will require scientists to develop ways of diagnosing\, treating and preventing the disease\, and the public is understandably ea ger to know how close scientists are to these goals. However\, scientists often struggle to effectively communicate their research to non-experts\, and both politicians and the media are imperfect intermediaries. Using exa mples relevant to COVID-19\, this talk will help non-scientists to evaluat e what scientists say and understand what they really mean. It will also p rovide advice for effectively discussing technical information with lay au diences.
