Periodic appraisal of employee performance compared to established metrics\, is required for sustained achievement of team and organizational goals. During a perform ance review matters related to tenure and pay come into sharp focus. This can \;therefore be a stessful and uncomfortable activity for both mana ger and employee. If handled thoughtfully and executed effectively\, a per formance review can be an opportune time to refocus\, energize and motivat e employees. Interpersonal and communications skills are essential eleme nts of an effective review. Managers must enumerate achievements and rewar d the employee accordingly\, but must also define and discuss areas for im provement\, and set development goals for stronger performance in the futu re. Employee input must also be encouraged to obtain a deeper understand ing of how results \;were achieved\, and to discover ideas which may b e implemented to improve the performance of others within the team and pos sibly the entire organization.
